What is sports massage?
Sports massage is a form of massage that manipulates soft tissue to benefit individuals that are experiencing pain, aches and tightness.
Soft tissue is connective tissue that has not calcified into bone which consists of skin, muscles, tendons, ligaments and fascia. Soft tissue manipulation is designed to assist in correcting problems and imbalances that are caused by repetitive and strenuous physical activity, trauma, improper technique and poor posture.
Sports massage can also be administered prior to exercise and is said to promote and enhance performance by increasing mitochondria which increases the rate that muscles utilise oxygen. It can also increase blood flow and muscle temperature whilst decreasing heart rate and blood pressure.
Similarly, sport massage is also used post-exercise to help individuals repair and recover quicker. Post-exercise massage helps relax the muscles and improves the nutrients available to them through increased blood flow. Post-exercise massage can also help by flushing away toxins, left by vigorous exercise, through the lymphatic system.
Sports massage also has psychological benefits with many people reporting a feeling of pure relaxation, reduced anxiety, improved mood and better sense of well-being.
